Transcription: A heart attack or myocardial infarction occurs when blood is prevented from reaching a portion of heart muscle, causing damage to the heart. A heart attack may be caused when blood vessels become blocked by an embolus, or circulating blood clot, which then functions as a plug, sealing off a specific area of the heart from essential blood supply and causing death of heart cells due to lack of oxygen.
